Race Walking differs from running in that the athlete is required to familiarise themselves with correct race walking technique in order to maintain contact with the ground whilst trying to move forward as fast as possible. The technique of the athlete is therefore of paramount importance and is governed by Rule 230 of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) rule 230 and defined as: “Race walking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs. The advancing leg shall be straightened (i.e. not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until in the vertical upright position.” Athletes are scrutinised during an event by a team of judges.
